Who do I want my kids to see me to be?
Jul 27, 2023As a home educating mum I have, and will continue to have this question at the forefront of my mind.
In our journey as parents, it is essential to recognize that we are not immune to the influence of our own upbringing and the beliefs passed down through generations. As humans, we often carry limiting beliefs and biases inherited from our families and society. These deeply ingrained beliefs can unknowingly shape our parenting style and impact the way we raise our children.
Limiting beliefs can take various forms, such as fixed notions about gender roles, expectations around academic or career paths or our abilities, or even prejudices related to race, culture, disability or religion. When we allow these beliefs to go unquestioned, they may inadvertently influence how we communicate with and guide our children. This can lead to unconsciously passing on limiting beliefs to the next generation, perpetuating a cycle of outdated attitudes and mindsets.
As parents, it is crucial to engage in self-reflection and challenge these inherited beliefs. Where did they come from? Why are they there? What purpose did they serve in history? Why do we believe that? What were the prejudices that lead to that opinion? Do I want to perpetuate that? Does it serve me in any way now?
By acknowledging their existence, we can consciously decide whether they align with our values and the kind of upbringing we want to provide for our children. Breaking free from limiting beliefs requires openness to change and a willingness to educate ourselves about diverse perspectives and progressive ideologies.
This is in no way a small feat, it takes a life-long approach to questioning and staying open minded to new ideas, steadily reducing judgement of both yourself and others, offering more grace and compassion.
Incorporating progressive educational approaches, such as home education, growth mindset, intuitive eating, and HAES principles, among so many others - can help us break away from traditional, limiting paradigms. Home education allows us to explore various subjects and worldviews without being confined to a predetermined curriculum. A growth mindset challenges the notion of fixed abilities and encourages a belief in limitless potential. Intuitive eating and HAES principles promote body acceptance and challenge harmful diet culture, fostering a positive and inclusive environment.
As parents, we have the opportunity to break the cycle of limiting beliefs and create a more open-minded and compassionate future for our children. By actively examining our beliefs, seeking knowledge beyond what we were taught, and embracing progressive approaches to education and well-being, we can empower our children to thrive in a world that celebrates diversity and critical thinking.
In conclusion, as we navigate the rewarding journey of parenthood, it is essential to remember that we are not only raising our children in the present but also shaping the generations to come. By recognizing and challenging the limiting beliefs passed down through generations, we can create a nurturing environment that fosters growth, acceptance, and a lifelong love of learning. Let us embark on this transformative path, one that empowers both ourselves and our children to become compassionate, open-minded, and empathetic individuals.
